Workshop: Stacey Harvey Brown (part 1)

October 1, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Texture Weaving Workshop With Stacey Harvey-Brown
Texture can be created through using textured yarns, combinations of structures and/or materials. This workshop aims to give you an introduction to 3 methods of creating dimensional texture using techniques that you might not have considered before. Shibori for texture uses polyester or thermoplastic yarns for weft, overshot for texture uses differential shrinkage in the weft and seer-sucker uses differential shrinkage in the warp plus extra shrinkage in the weft.

Designs will be familiar overshot patterns for 4 and 8 shafts, and seersucker can give very varied results on simple 4-shaft threadings depending on materials, sleying and ratios of wool to cotton. Weft materials include cotton, wool and polyester plus some optional others that you might like to try such as elastane, overtwist yarns, singles etc.

Workshop Details:
• Introduction session by Zoom Sun 1st Oct. 2023— 10am –11.30am ET. Inspiration talk on structural weaving, yarn selection and weaving designs.
• Participants then work on design and warp their looms independently.

Instructor Bio:
A weaver for 30 years, Stacey loves to explore dimensional texture, dive deep into structure and create weaving courses, books and artwork inspired by natural forms, science and optical illusions.
Distilling techniques from her art into as few shafts as possible and sharing that with fellow weavers is a particular pleasure. An MA (2011-14) allowed her 3 years of investigating tubular dimensional forms and complex structural hangings.
Stacey is the founder of weaving studio “The Loom Room France” in South-West France, where she teaches weavers in a beautiful, historic setting.
