Drop Spindle Workshop
May 6, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
$75EHS Guild Drop Spindle Workshop
With Joan McKenzie, and Karen Fowler
Participants will learn the ancient and satisfying art of spinning, using a drop spindle to make yarn.
Joan will give a brief history of the drop spindle, and cover types of drop spindles, what to look for when using and buying a spindle, and she will teach beginners the park and draft spinning method. Hand plying will be demonstrated to make 2-ply from handspun yarn. Other techniques will be demonstrated to more advanced spinners, such as “ply-on-the-fly”.
The workshop will split into two spinning circles; one for novice spinners to try drop spindle for the first time, and a second for those who want to practice and improve techniques with an experienced tutor. A range of spindle styles will be available to try in our “drop-spindle petting zoo”.
Supplied in the workshop will be prepared roving.
Drop spindles will be available to rent for $5 fee, or to buy for $20 if you want to take a spindle home. You are welcome to bring your own spindles.
